The 2014 Honda Accord Coupe, Honda Accord Sedan, Honda Civic Sedan and Honda Odyssey have all earned the latest Top Safety Pick+ designation from the IIHS, which has once again tightened qualifications for its much-watched safety-recognition program.

Beginning with the 2014 model year, the IIHS will require Top Safety Pick+ vehicles to have some form of forward collision-mitigation technology while also passing evaluations for:

  • Front-overlap impacts
  • Moderate-overlap impacts
  • Side-impact scenarios
  • Roof strength
  • Head-restraint performance

Just keep in mind that the Top Safety Pick+ designation only applies to models with qualifying forward collision-mitigation features, like the brand’s Forward Collision Warning system that alert drivers if they’re coming up on slow or stopped objects too quickly.

Also, another vehicle from the brand, the 2014 Honda Civic Coupe, was named a standard Top Safety Pick. The IIHS has raised the safety bar even here, too, by adding the front-overlap and head-restraint tests. Exactly how high is the new benchmark? The first batch of 2013 Top Safety Pick winners, including “+” vehicles, totaled 130 members; this year’s initial honor roll contains just 39 total entries.

With Honda’s luxury division pitching in with two Top Safety Pick+ winners (2014 Acura RLX and MDX) and one standard Top Safety Pick (Acura TL), it made for a notable double play:

As explained by Art St. Cyr, vice president of product planning and logistics at American Honda: “As the industry leader in Top Safety Pick+ ratings for 2013 and now 2014, it’s clear that our commitment to offer advanced safety technologies on mainstream products continues to pay dividends to Honda and Acura customers. Honda and Acura vehicles should be at the top of the shopping list for those who value safety ratings and the engineering prowess required to achieve them.”
